About Our
Group

Welcome to Bucks Historical Longsword. Started in the fall of 2016, our club focuses on training in German longsword and the teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer, a sword master in the late Middle Ages. Using texts from the 15th and early 16th centuries, written in Early New High German, we aim to learn how the art of sword fighting was done in the Middle Ages, and how we too can train these skills.

We take what we do seriously, understanding this as a martial art that was historically used and respected. We dive in, we train hard, and we have a great time-- because, honestly, sword fighting is a lot of fun.

Thank you for checking us out, and please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have!

Stephen Cheney began studying longsword at the Crossing Fight School in 2015. Prior to practicing Historical European Martial Arts, he had studied kendo since 2008, and practiced modern fencing for three years in college. He currently holds 4th dan in kendo (AUSKF) and 4th kyu in judo (USJA).

Stephen has staffed and given seminars at several prominent national tournaments such as Longpoint and Iron Gate Exhibition. He has achieved some success as a longsword competitor in the northeast USA region.

Stephen also enjoys reading and translating original sources. Several of his translations are currently featured on Wiktenauer.com, and has self published the book Ringeck Danzig Lew: Long Sword, which contains translations of our main source material.

Stevi Parker picked up a longsword for the first time in March 2021 and has been consumed by it ever since. A seasoned buck, she achieved the #2 spot internationally in the Women’s and Under-represented Genders’ Longsword rating category as of April 2024.

Stevi is a vocal advocate for equity in competitive HEMA and is a proud supporter of inclusive events such as our local marginalized gender tournament, Ladies’ Knight, of which she is the two-time reigning champion. She has also found her place as a respected tournament director, having been invited to referee at numerous tournaments, including Ascalon Sword Festival, South Eastern Renaissance Fencing Open, and Ars Gladii Open.

Jeffrey Will started studying longsword with Bucks Historical Longsword in the summer of 2021 and it quickly developed into a passion. Since then, he has traveled to events around the United States and in Europe, enjoying learning and competition at every stop.

With a background in boxing, baseball, and forays into other sports, Jeff likes to incorporate a study of body mechanics and psychology into his fencing and coaching. To deepen his appreciation for fencing, he also likes to read and engage with both the sources and the broader historical context in which they exist.

Henry Reynolds began his HEMA fencing career in November 2021 studying Johannes Liechtenauer with Bucks Historical Longsword. Henry started traveling both domestically in the U.S. and internationally to compete in longsword tournaments in 2023 and has since become a respected fencer and judge.

Henry enjoys engaging with longsword fencing through practicing, reading, discussing and theorizing on the source material, and his background in animation gives him a unique perspective when coaching and teaching. His long history with modern saber is also prevalent in his longsword fencing style.
